SOUTH KOREA
"MADE IN KOREA"-The Koreans have literally produced
ski resorts out of
thin air. In a land whose low, thickly forested mountains and
monsoon
climate (dry in winter) is not suitable for skiing, the industrious
people
have beat nature and created prosperous ski resorts with the use
of
artificial snow. The ski resorts borrow ideas from Japan, Europe,
and the
U.S. to provide an experience uniquely Korean. In visiting the
top resorts
of Yong Pyong, Muju, and Alps, however, we were even more impressed
by the
friendly nature of the local people than by the accomplishments
of their
industriousness. In addition to describing our ski experience
in Korea,
this article gives information about the resorts, practical tips
about
visiting the country, and describes a few of the other sites that
can be
seen in Korea. The country is small, and with a rental car, one
can easily
traverse Korea from east to west and north to south, visiting
both ski
resorts and other national parks during a week's vacation.
