ALBANIA
ALBANIAN ADVENTURE-Albania is filled with snow
covered mountains in almost every part of the country, and yet,
it is not really a ski country. While skiing developed into a
major recreational pastime for the people of many countries in
the years following World War II, forty years under the iron grip
of Enver Hoxa and his uncompromising brand of communism, left
this beautiful country without the ski lifts and other infrastructure
necessary for the sport. Nevertheless, where there is snow and
mountains, there can be skiing. Dutch Alpinist, Ronald Naar, who
has climbed the "seven summits", crossed Greenland on
skis, and other such adventures, joins me in a trip of discovery
in this little known, undeveloped land in the heart of Europe.
We go ski touring, meet kind, generous people in mountain villages,
and learn that even without infrastructure, the Albanian people
are also skiers, who hope and dream of a brighter future.
