WEEKEND SKIER SYNDROME-Weekend Skier Syndrome
is a malady common among third world countries, where the capacity
of the lifts is often inadequate for heavy weekend traffic. The
opposite side of the coin is that there are not enough skiers
on weekdays to merit most of the lifts being open, causing an
even bigger problem for the weekday patrons. On this trip we skied
in the two best ski areas in the countryZare Lazarevski
near the village of Mavrova and Popova Sapka near Tetovo. Macedonia
is a pretty country with lovely lakes and mountains, but it suffers
from war-damaged lifts, an overflow of garbage that disturbs the
countryside, and a lack of money to deal with such problems. Nevertheless,
there are some good mountains for skiing, and now might just be
the best time to experience those mountains before some investors
make the kind of improvements that will bring thousands of tourists
to the slopes here.
