BANFF & WHISTLER/BLACKCOMB
THE TRUTH ABOUT CANADIAN SKIING-A spring
visit to Lake Louise, Mt. Norquay, and Sunshine Village, (all
in the Banff ski region) along with a week in Whistler/Blackcomb
provided a textbook lesson in the many differences between skiing
in North America and in the Alps. It also revealed that certain
myths about Canadian skiing exist in the minds of many Europeans.
Did you know that the Canadian Rockies had no destination ski
resorts as late as the early 1970s?...that Whistler/Blackcomb
gets only about one sunny day a week?....or that one can ski much
more powder in the Alps than in Canada, but Canada is a good place
for mogul skiing? The differences between Banff and Whistler are
also acute. Banff offers a low key atmosphere, pristine virgin
nature and immense wilderness in its national park, and the stunning
Banff Springs Hotel, one of the most beautiful hotels in the world.
Whistler/Blackcomb, on the other hand, offers the largest vertical
in North America, an emphasis on extreme terrain, one of the most
popular resorts on the continent, and all the hype and hoopla
that one would expect in this island of excess.
