MT. ALYESKA, ALASKA

ALASKA FOR EVERYBODY-Skiing in Alaska has received a lot of print in recent years as a result of the extreme heliskiing and the World Extreme Skiing Championships held in Valdez each winter. Not so many skiers, however, know that just outside Anchorage is Mt. Alyeska, a beautiful conventional ski resort with stunning panoramas over the glistening waters of nearby Turnabout Arm. Excellent heliskiing of a not so extreme nature is also available directly from the area’s four-star Westin Alyeska Prince Hotel, at the base of the lifts. Here, in the little community of Girdwood, one can enjoy a vacation, which combines skiing with some of the fantastic sights and experiences unique to America’s last frontier. On a day off from skiing at Mt. Alyeska, one can go kayaking, take a wildlife cruise to see eagles, sea otters, sea lions, whales, and porpoises, or fly over Prince William Sound where numerous mammoth glaciers calve icebergs into the fjords.
