SOUTHERN CHILE

The volcano resorts of southern Chile-DREAMERS, FOOLS, OR VISIONARIES--THE VOLCANO COUNTRY OF CHILE-In this feature, former world champion Telemark skier, Antti-Pekka Auvinen and I ski the volcano country of Chile. Our road trip includes visits to bigger resorts like Thermas de Chillan and Pucon (Volcano Villarica) as well as the small areas of Los Arenales, Corralco, Las Araucarias, Antillanca, Osorno, and Antuco. In this primeval land of tropical rain forests, beautiful lakes, and towering volcanoes, it seems as if a dinosaur might come around the hillside at any moment. We also discover a Wild West atmosphere of entrepreneurs trying to form their dream into a reality in some of these lovely local ski areas. It is an atmosphere where a man with a vision can build his dream-resort, and a skier who longs for the atmosphere of being on the frontier of civilization can also fulfill his fantasy.
